Closed Grocery Store Torn Down

The former Aldi grocery store in Middletown Township has been taken down.

Contractors were hard at work this week tearing down the 15,000-square-foot building that was home to Aldi before the location in moved in summer 2019 to a new spot a short distance away.

The former Aldi building had occupied the 2.83-acre lot off Woodbourne Road since 2004.

Within days, crews have turned the empty building into a few piles of rubble.

Last year, two Baltimore-based developers were seeking to construct a large self-storage building and fast food eatery on the property.

The plans had not yet moved before the Middletown Township Board of Supervisors for a vote.

The property is zoned commercial.

The former Aldi property abuts an area where plans for a several-hundred unit residential complex fell apart a few years ago.
