A Neshaminy middle schoolers’ request to her principal ended up spreading across the district.

Poquessing Middle School fifth-grader Sara Harvey spoke to Principal Timothy Hunt in late August about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place in September.

Hunt welcomed Sara’s suggestion and staff were thrilled to take part.

The school, which sits in Lower Southampton Township, put a message of awareness on their electronic sign and recognized Sara and fellow fifth-grader Kayden, both cancer survivors.

In September, Poquessing, Tawanka Elementary School, Herbert Hoover Elementary School, Maple Point Middle School, Carl Sandburg Middle School, and Neshaminy High School “went gold.” Sara passed out gold ribbons to staff and students. She also spoke to students around her battle with eye cancer when she was younger.

Sara addressed the school board at their meeting earlier this week.

“I just celebrated seven years cancer-free the other week, but I am one of the lucky ones. Almost 2,000 children die each year due to the lack of funding for research,” she said.

Sara explained that her mission is to raise awareness of childhood cancer.

The school board said they will recognize Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and support efforts to raise awareness.
