A volunteer firefighter has been identified by friends and family as the man killed when he was struck while riding his bicycle along Route 13 early Tuesday.

Daniel Santiago, 53, a Bristol Borough resident, was hit by a vehicle while riding his bike just before 1 a.m. on Route 13 between Green Lane and Beaver Dam Road. The striking vehicle fled.
Police were still searching for the striking vehicle as of Tuesday afternoon.
Santiago, who was raised in Bristol Borough and lived there throughout his adult life, was a member of Goodwill Hose Company. A firefighter who served with him said he was part of Bristol Borough’s fire service for more than 30 years.

Friends and family described Santiago as a “good guy” who loved riding his bicycle around the area. He was a staple when he worked at the gas station at the corner of Route 13 and Bath Street for years.
“Daniel was very much loved,” recalled Angelita Santiago, his cousin.

She said the family was taking his loss hard.
Lori McKelvey, a Bristol Borough resident and friend of Santiago, said his loss will impact her and her family.
“Danny was one of the most genuine and kindhearted people I’ve ever known,” she said.

McKelvey recalled that Santiago would always have her and her neighbors on Swain Street laughing.
The home she lives at was previously his residence and she became friends with him when he stopped by to get his mail.

“He’d come cook rice and beans and taught me how to make it. I heard from him Saturday and he said he’d come visit and give me a hug before I moved and that he loved me,” she said.
Those who knew Santiago said they hope the person who struck him and left him to die will be found.

A bicyclist was killed along Route 13 early Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run crash.
The crash happened around 12:55 a.m. on southbound Route 13 between Beaver Dam Road and Green Lane in Bristol Township.
“The bicyclist was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle which fled the scene. The striking vehicle should have front end damage,” police said in a statement.

The bicyclist was a 53-year-old local man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they continue to seek more information on the fatal hit-and-run crash.

Officers were assisted at the scene by fire police and the Third District Fire Company.
