FLASHBACK TO 1907: Cattle Breeders At Fallsington & Bristol Graduation


A regular feature looking back at what was being printed more than 100 years ago in the former Bucks County Gazette. This week’s entry comes from the June 5, 1907 edition of the newspaper.

Cattle Breeders At Fallsington

Representatives of the Guernsey Breeders Association and the Eastern Breeders Association met last Friday at the home of Henry W. Comfort, Fallsington. About 100 men were present.

During the conference addresses were made by Dr. Leonard Pearson of the University of Pennsylvania, Professor Harry Hayward, head of the Delaware Experimental Station, and Dr. E.B. Voorhees, of New Brunswick, president of the New Jersey State Board of Agriculture. The guests came from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. They arrived by a special train. An inspection of Mr. Comfort’s dairy was made.

Dr. Pearson spoke upon “The Need Better Live Stock In Pennsylvania and a suggestion.”

Professor Hay ward led a discussion upon ‘ ‘How Near and How Wide It Is Safe to lnbreed,” which proved interesting and instructive.

The visitors carried away with them many practical Ideas as the result of study of the methods in use in the Comfort farm. Mr. Comfort’s farm is considered one of the finest farms in Pennsylvania. There are fifty head of cattle cared and the dally production of milk is 375 quarts.

Many of the cattle are thoroughbred Guernseys and others are crosses Guernsey sires on Hotsteins. The are thoroughly sanitary and have cement floors.
