Overnight work on the Route 1 improvement project will cause a reduction in open lanes this week.

PennDOT officials said the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 1 will be reduced to a single lane between the Neshaminy Interchange in Bensalem Township and Pine Street overpass in Middletown Township Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The lane closures are to allow crews to excavate as they prepare for reconstruction and widening the 1.5 miles of Route 1 currently being worked on.

In addition, crews may put lane restrictions in place periodically during the week from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the northbound or southbound lanes of Route 1 between Rockhill Drive and Old Lincoln Highway and on eastbound or westbound Street Road between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way in Bensalem Township.

The Route 1 project is on Phase 2. The second phase will widen the highway, upgrade the Neshaminy and Penndel interchanges, and replace theย bridges over the Neshaminy Creek and over rail lines near the Penndel exit.

The $110.8 million second phase of the project is being carried out by Chester County-based contractor JD Eckman Inc.

A proposed third phase would begin at the Penndel/Business Route 1 Interchange and continue just past the Pine Street (Route 413) overpass in Middletown Township. The full details of that phase have not been released. PennDOT has not included a proposed construction start date or cost estimate.
