FLASHBACK TO 1920: Auto Truck Goes Through Bridge In Edgely

A regular feature looking back at what was being printed more than 100 years ago in the Bristol Daily Courier. This week’s entry comes from the April 8, 1920 edition of the newspaper.

Auto Truck Goes Through Bridge – Hangs In Precarious Position Over Canal

File photo

A six-ton motor truck hangs suspended from the center of the bridge over the canal at Edgely today, and unless the truck is extricated from its dangerous position within the next few hours, it probably will fall into the canal with its capacity load with its freight in transit from New York to Philadelphia.

The machine is owned by a New York motor truck transportation company. In the truck was a chauffeur and a young boy. Yesterday afternoon, the truck attempted to cross the bridge and, as it reached the center of the structure, the rear crushed the floor and went through. The front trucks of the machine held fast, but the auto gradually slipped further through during the night. This morning, the truck was half way through the bridge.

Canal boats are being placed underneath with the hope that the truck can be jacked up before it falls thru completely.

The bridge is a constant source of danger to the heavy auto truck traffic over this road and there is scarcely a week passes that trucks do not have accidents on it. The bridge like many of the others spanning the canal is antiquated, dangerous, and a detriment to the community.
