As Bristol Township looked at their infrastructure, officials moved forward with the idea that a community center was needed to serve the county’s second most populous municipality.

Looking at various ideas and proposed costs, the best option has been determined to be renovating and expanding the current senior center at the Bristol Township Municipal Complex at 2501 Bath Road.

The existing building would be wrapped with an expansion that would feature flex spaces, offices for the parks and recreation department, and room for the senior center, officials told Bristol Township Council at their Wednesday evening meeting.

The new facility would have the ability to serve parks and recreation users, summer camps, rentals, and continue to be a place for seniors. There would also be the opportunity for intergenerational programing.

Bristol Township Community Development Director Van Strother said the expansion would also give the aging facility new use and “curb appeal” to match the addition of the new community park and upgrades to the Municipal Building.

The township still needs to have formal plans drawn up and to finalize costs.

Township Manager Randee Elton said there was $3 million in the 2020 budget for the project, but COVID-19 stunted much of the work. She said the township may have to borrow some funds to construct the upgraded facility.

The township is looking to move forward with plans and aims to have shovels in the ground by spring.

Council President Craig Bowen said the project was “way overdue.”

The township is considering building a new fire station at the former Inspire Federal Credit Union building on Bath Road next to new park, but no firm plans have been announced.
