Due To Higher-Than-Expected Cost, YMCA Scales Back Plans

The YMCA of Bucks County Fairless Hills building renovation project is moving forward, but the plans are a bit smaller.

Last week before Bristol Township Council, the YMCA of Bucks County gained approval for amended plans for the building on South Oxford Valley Road in Bristol Township’s Fairless Hills section.

The plans call for shrinking the 52,785-square-foot building to about 42,000 square feet through taking down a portion and completely revamping what remains. A new entryway would be constructed as part of the project.

A representative for the YMCA said higher-than-expected construction costs means the facility will not include a roughly 4,000-square-foot child care center. The changes will help keep the project within budget.

In a press release earlier this month, the YMCA said the timeline for the facility upgrade has been accelerated so it will be done within a year, rather than the previous timeline of 18 months to two years.

Between the Fairless Hills building upgrades and an overhaul of the Doylestown branch, the project is expected to cost $about 15 million with most being spend on the South Oxford Valley Road facility.

The Bristol Township YMCA location serves about 6,000 members.

In October, the YMCA of Bucks County announced the plan to renovate the building after a proposal fell through for a new location.
