Regional Rail Ridership Down, Changes To Bus Schedules Announced

SEPTA Regional Rail service has seen an 80 percent decrease in use due to COVID-19 closures.

The Regional Rail service, which is running at a reduced schedule, has seen the drop off due to closures of businesses and offices, SEPTA officials said.

On Thursday morning, SEPTA announced bus service will run on a Saturday schedule starting this upcoming Sunday. In addition to buses, the Saturday schedule will be rolled out on the Market-Frankford Line, Broad Street Line, Trolleys, and Norristown High Speed Line

Starting Friday, SEPTA will temporarily close outlying Regional Rail station ticket windows and waiting rooms to increase social distancing. Fares will continue to be available for purchase at the five Center City Ticket Offices and the SEPTA Key Fare Kiosks at these stations.

Andrew Busch, SEPTA’s chief press officer, said riders will have the ability to pay cash fares on Regional Rail trains. He noted SEPTA crews are taking precautions and will be wearing gloves to handle cash.

All Regional Rail fares will be reduced to weekend and evening rates.

“I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication our workforce has shown during this unprecedented crisis,” SEPTA General Manager Leslie Richards said. “Everyone is pulling in the same direction, and that gives me great hope that we will ultimately pull through this very trying time.” 

SEPTA officials said they worked with the unions that represent their staff to make sure service is available for riders while balancing safety.
