A cell phone tower will not be built on the property of one of the Neshaminy School District’s buildings.
On Wednesday, the Facilities and Planning Committee voted down a proposal to build the tower at Poquessing Middle School at the corner of the property near Poquessing Avenue and Arbor Lane in Lower Southampton.

The proposal will not move forward to the full school board at this time.
Verizon Wireless was looking to construct a 105-foot cell phone tower with five additional feet on top for a lightning rod. The tower would be designed to look like a large pine tree, according to plans that came before the district in June.
The community has spoken out against the plan and even started a petition against it. They cited concerns over the tower being close to a school and impacts it could have on students.

The American Cancer Society and Environmental Protection Agency have stated that there is no science to back up that spending time at a reasonable distance from equipment on a cell phone tower causes any serious impact, but the matter remains under study.
