“Advanced deterioration” on the Hulmeville Avenue bridge that crosses the rail lines has led to the emergency closure of the span.
PennDOT officials said Friday afternoon that the bridge was closed following a Tuesday bridge inspection discovered that the crumbing bridge had deteriorated further.

“During the closure, Hulmeville Avenue motorists will be directed to use detoured over Comly Avenue, Bellevue Avenue, and Lincoln Highway. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area,” a statement from PennDOT said.
In April, LevittownNow.com was first to report that the 86-year-old bridge that crosses the CSX and SEPTA tracks to connect Penndel and Langhorne Manor was going to be replaced before 2021. At the time, PennDOT officials estimated the replacement cost at $4.7 million.
The 147-foot-long bridge carries about 4,600 vehicles per day. Previous to this week, the bridge was already listed as being in “poor” condition, according to PennDOT data.

Officials from the state transportation agency said bids for the work are expected to open in August.
The bridge had been posted for 27 tons and 40 tons for combination loads.
