Croydon Fire Company Chief Tom Tryon was in his backyard when he spotted the smoke coming from a home about a block away Sunday evening. From there, he jumped into action along with a number of other volunteers.
Tryon and firefighters from the America Hose Hook and Ladder, Bristol, Croydon, Edgely, Newportville, Third District, and Union fire companies responded around 6 p.m. and found the home in the 400 block of Cedar Avenue in Bristol Township’s Croydon section well involved. Flames were coming from the structure.

Crews fought the blaze and had it under control as of 6:35 p.m., Tryon said.

The residents were home but escaped injury. Several of their cats were killed in the fire.
A firefighter from the Edgely Fire Company was transported to the hospital and released after he suffered burns, Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito said. Tryon explained that hot embers ended up going down the back of the firefighter’s jacket and caused the burns.

Dippolito said he determined the fire was caused by an extension cord failure that happened on the front porch.

The home suffered heavy damage in the blaze.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the fire victims.
