After close to 30 years in the Bristol Borough School District, Superintendent Dr. Thomas Shaffer plans to retire in the summer.

Shaffer, who has worked his way from a principal to leader of the roughly 1,000-student district, will leave the school system when his contract ends on July 31.

The school board accepted Shaffer’s retirement at their November meeting.

The Bucks County Intermediate Unit will aid the district in their search for a new superintendent at no additional cost. The aim is to have a new superintendent picked before Shaffer retires.

As part of their search efforts, the Bucks County Intermediate Unit has set up an online survey to determine strengths, challenges, goals, and personal attributes residents are interested in. The survey will be open until Monday, January 7 at 11:59 p.m., said JoAnn Perotti, director of strategic services for the Bucks County Intermediate Unit.

The responses to the survey are anonymous and confidential.

Shaffer was hired in 2014 to replace Gregory Wright when the school board opted not to renew his superintendent contract.
