A 23-year-old Lower Makefield man was killed when his motorcycle slammed into the back of a van in Levittown last Friday night.

A Falls Township police officer was on patrol in the area of New Falls Road when he spotted a motorcycle weaving between traffic and moving at a high rate of speed around 11:15 p.m. At one point, the motorcycle was in the opposite lane of traffic, police said.

The officer was headed the opposite direction on New Falls Road as the motorcycle and he heard the driver accelerate more. The officer was working to determine where the two-wheeled vehicle had gone. At that time, the officer heard a loud crash and saw the motorcycle burst into flames as it slammed into the back of a work van in the area of New Falls Road and and Thornridge Pass, police said.

A nearby tow truck driver put out the flaming pieces of the motorcycle while the officer found the motorcyclist unresponsive with injuries and called for medics.

Motorcyclist Matthew Thomas was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.
