A storage shed at PennDOT’s yard in Falls Township was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon, sending a large plume of smoke into the blue afternoon sky.
Firefighters rushed to the large multi-stall storage shed at the PennDOT yard off Tyburn Road near Route 13 around 1 p.m.

Crews pulled up to the storage yard to find the shed, which was walled on three sides and open on one, to find it ablaze. It appeared the fire was burning for some time before it was noticed, Falls Township Fire Company Deputy Chief Andy Hilbert said.
It was determined the fire was not a threat to the nearby salt shed or any other structures, so firefighters waited until a PennDOT crew arrived to take down the smoldering building. Firefighters drafted water from the nearby Rock Run Creek to put out any remaining fire because the PennDOT property has no hydrants, Hilbert said.
Fire Marshal Rich Dippolito said the storage unit was used to hold blacktop materials for maintenance crews.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation as of late Sunday afternoon. Dippolito plans to examine the site again Monday.
The Falls Township Fire Company was assisted by crews from the Fairless Hills, Levittown No. 1, Levittown No. 2, and Morrisville fire companies.
