Two people were seriously injured in an early Saturday morning crash on Route 1 in Middletown.

Police Lt. Pete Feeney said a Kia Soul traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 1 struck a Honda Civic that was driving in the correct direction head-on around 1 a.m. just north of the Pine Street overpass.

A Dodge Nitro trying to avoid the crash struck the concrete median, Feeney said.

The drivers of the Honda and Dodge avoided serious injuries.

The driver and passenger in the wrong-way Kia were transported to St. Mary Medical Center with unspecified serious injuries.

Feeney said alcohol may have played a role, but Officer Brian Agostino was continuing the investigation.
