A failed attempt to thaw frozen pipes led to a fire that destroyed a mobile home Friday night.

The fire destroyed the mobile home at a community off of the 1000 block of Old Bristol Pike in Falls Township’s Morrisville section around 10 p.m.

The flames gutted one mobile home and damaged the siding on another nearby unit, but all the residents escaped and left the scene once firefighters arrived, Fire Marshal Rich Dippolito said.

A resident of the home that was destroyed told Dippolito that he was under the mobile home thawing pipes with a blowtorch when the fire started.

Firefighters from the Falls Township, Fairless Hills, Levittown No. 1, Levittown No. 2, Morrisville and Tullytown fire companies braved temperatures in the low teens to extinguish the flames. The Levittown-Fairless Hills Rescue Squad also responded.

Dippolito warned thawing pipes can be dangerous and said newer heat tape products can be an effective and safe option for mobile home residents.
