
An SUV with ammunition in the back caught fire in Middletown’s Levittown section Friday afternoon.
The older Chevrolet Tahoe caught on fire while driving and the motorist pulled into an empty parking lot at the Racquet Club Apartments off Veterans Highway (Route 413) around 12:30 p.m.

William Penn Fire Company Deputy Chief Jim Bampfield said crews from his station and the Newportville Fire Company arrived to find flames and shotgun shells going off.
The driver was transporting five boxes of shotgun shells when the blaze engulfed the SUV.
Bampfield said ammunition exploding and extreme cold both caused problems for firefighters.

No injuries were reported.
The fire sent a thick black column of smoke into the air above the scene.
