The Falls Township American Legion Post was among the many that held Veterans Day to honor those who have served and those currently serving in the armed forces.
The ceremony at American Legion Post 834 was the first Veterans Day ceremony run by Carmine Maggio. Maggio has been the post’s commander since July, but has been a member of the legion for 23 years. Before getting involved in the legion, Maggio served in the armed forces for 24 years.

It is important to host and hold these ceremonies for a number of reasons, Maggio said.
“We need this recognition because of the kids that are here,” he added. “It is good for them to know that we are out there fighting for them.”
According to Maggio, it falls to ceremonies like those held on Saturday to help kids recognize the role veterans play and have played in their lives, even if they did not know it.

A lot of kids see holidays like Memorial Day and Veterans Day as a chance to get out of school. Not enough of them really know what the days are about, the American Legion Post commander said.
During the ceremony, members of the American Legion Post spoke about the importance of honoring veterans who came home and remembering and honoring those who did not. The ceremony concluded with “Taps” being played.
