A man who grew up in Langhorne and Levittown has been named the new president of West Chester University.
Dr. Christopher M. Fiorentino, 63, was selected Thursday by the Board of Governors for the Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education to lead West Chester University starting Monday. He has been the interim president at the university since April.

Fiorentino was raised in Langhorne and Levittown. He went on to graduate from Neshaminy High School before earning three degrees in economics – a baccalaureate, master’s and Ph.D. – from Temple University.
The appointment comes after Fiorentino has spent 33 years working at West Chester University, which has about 15,000 students enrolled. He began as an assistant professor of economics before working as dean of West Chester’s College of Business and Public Affairs. He more recently served as as vice president for external operations at the university since 2013.
“I thank the Board of Governors for the confidence they have shown in me by appointing me as the fifteenth president of West Chester University,” Fiorentino said. “My years of leadership at WCU have prepared me well for the challenges and opportunities ahead, both at the university and at the state system level.”

Barry C. Dozor, a member of the university’s Council of Trustees, said Fiorentino is the right choice and affirmed that the Bucks County-raised academic will bring “passion, commitment, leadership and vision to the presidency.”
Fiorentino was picked after a nationwide search for a new president.

Philly.com reported Fiorentino’s wife, Sue, is an attorney and a faculty member at the university.
