Thirty-five Lower Bucks County families were the beneficiaries of the generosity of Middletown residents, police and businesses.

On Sunday morning, about three dozen children took part in the Middletown Township Police Department’s first “Shop with a Cop” event at the Target on East Lincoln Highway.

“We’ve helped other local departments in the past but this is our first year doing our own Shop with a Cop,” she said.

For elementary school-aged brothers Cain and Wesley Gunn, their shopping trip was one that allowed them to spend time with Officer Michael Stumm and pick up Christmas presents, including each others.

Officer Melissa Robison said each of the kids who went out with an officer received $100 to buy presents. In addition, some of the officers went above and beyond to buy gifts for kids using their personal money.

The money for Shop with a Cop was collected from various events including National Night Out and a recent marketplace. Inspire Federal Credit Union, Orange Theory Fitness and Target all donated $500 for the event, Robison said, adding some residents were making personal donations as late as last Friday.

Once the children had gathered their gifts, volunteers from various businesses, the families of police officers and members of the Detective Christopher Jones Foundation wrapped the presents.

Robison said the department hopes to continue the Shop with a Cop program next year.
