An air pump that is part of a fire suppression system at a Middletown home improvement store ironically caught fire Tuesday.
The air pump that was in an elevated space merchandise in the Lowe’s store on West Lincoln Highway caught fire and was emitting smoke around lunchtime. Firefighters from multiple companies rushed to the scene and found the smoking piece of equipment, Fire Marshal Jim McGuire said.

The store was cleared and power to shut off to the building to make sure the air pump was not longer electrified.
McGuire said the fire didn’t extend to the large store and damage was contained.
While it isn’t common for fire suppression systems to catch on fire, McGuire said every piece of equipment can have problems.

Customers were allowed back in the store shortly after the building was deemed safe.
