Kmart Demolition Work Underway

Work to demolish the old Kmart on East Lincoln Highway in Middletown is underway.

Contractors have begun efforts to remove portions of the outside of the building while crews work on the inside. Earlier this summer, the large building had asbestos cleared from the inside.

Middletown Director of Zoning, Planning and Engineering Pat Duffy confirmed last month that permits for the demolition work had been obtained.

In 2015, CarMax Auto Superstores announced plans to build a new sales building and a separate inventory building at the old Kmart site.

The Kmart store closed in 2014.
