The former Kmart on East Lincoln Highway in Middletown will be coming down.

The demolition is planned so CarMax Auto Superstores can construct their facility, which will include a sales building and a separate inventory building. In total, the buildings replacing the Kmart will be smaller than 20,000-square-feet.

The new buildings for CarMax planned for 1776 East Lincoln Highway will bring upgrades to the parking lot. Jake Hertz, who represented CarMax before the Middletown Board of Supervisors last month, said the current parking lot will be milled and repaved before the auto dealership opens.

Inventory at the CarMax location will be organized by vehicle type, Hertz said. He added that the location will be open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and employee more than 50 people.

The Kmart closed in spring 2014 and has sat empty since. When the store closed, 87 part- and full-time employees lost their jobs.
