The Bucks County Technical High School’s Cosmetology Department hosted its fifth Hope Cuts event this past week.
By 10:30 a.m. Saturday, the charity event benefiting cancer nonprofit City of Hope Philadelphia had already served 56 people with discounted cosmetic services, according to event co-coordinator Shane White, a Bucks County Technical High School student. By the end of the day, the event served 116 people.

In addition to serving a large number of community members by providing discount beauty services, many who show up every year to Hope Cuts are familiar faces.
“It’s nice to see that it’s the same people who have been coming over the years,” said Brandee Baker, co-coordinator and cosmetology teacher at the school.
The event started at the school because Baker wanted a way for her students to be able to give back, and the students have really taken to the idea. Some former students have even returned after graduating to continue offering their services.

According to Baker, the tech school’s Hope Cuts event has been the highest earning school participant nationwide in each the previous four years.
“It’s really exciting that we can spread City of Hope’s mission,” said White.

The event wouldn’t be possible without the commitment and dedication of the students who get involved. Baker said 40 cosmetology students volunteered and 10 students in the Key Club staffed the event.
Hannah Hetzel, a 16 year old junior at the school, acted as the student coordinator of the event. She has been involved with Hope Cuts since she was a freshman, but this is the first year she could volunteer her services.
“It’s a really good thing to do, especially since the funds go towards the City of Hope.”
