For the 11th year in a row, Harry S. Truman High School students, under the direction of Diane Wilkin and Karen Bryceland, are participating in the Empty Bowls fundraiser, an international grassroots effort to raise money and awareness in the fight to end hunger. The project culminates with an Empty Bowls community breakfast on March 12, 2016. Breakfast is served between 8:30 and 11 a.m. at Truman High School.

The project includes three phases: building the bowls, glazing the bowls and the breakfast event. In January, students and community volunteers devoted a Saturday morning to creating ceramic bowls. Volunteers returned in February to glaze the bowls. The pre-breakfast events were done in anticipation of the main eventโ€”The Empty Bowls community breakfast, which will be held March 12.

The breakfast is open to the entire community. A $10 donation provides participants with a hot breakfast and an empty ceramic bowl to take home with them. The empty bowl serves as a reminder that hunger is a real and constant concern for many people across the globe.

Proceeds from the fundraiser support the Emergency Relief Association of Bucks County, a local food pantry. Attendees are encouraged to bring a bag of nonperishable food that will be donated to the food pantry. Those who donate food will receive a raffle ticket and be entered into a drawing for a basket of goodies.
