Bristol Resident’s Letter Asks Neighbors To Report Crime

Here are today’s Letters to the Editors…

Submitted by Bristol Borough resident Brandy Coons, who describes herself as a “disheartened resident, mother and human:”

I moved to Bristol Borough into 2008 – I was right out of college and I was coming from North Philadelphia where I attended Temple. I lived in an apartment right on the corner of Bath and Buckley for a year and immediately fell in love with the Borough. I loved that Bristol Borough had that small town community feel, I loved the summer festivals, car shows, and parades. I loved walking my dog through the various parks and dreaming about what it used to be like living in the 1800’s in the Borough when passing beautiful historic homes. A year in the Borough I decided I would make this my home and purchased a house a few blocks away. A few months later my home was burglarized… two days later they attempted to enter my home again – that alarm system promptly installed is still the best investment I ever made. I’ve had countless items taken off of my property – several windows smashed in my house and a baseball bat to my car window. In the over six years I have lived in the borough I have seen my street in the crime log way to often. The crime in the borough continues to rise. When I say this I am always rebutted with “Crime is Everywhere….”

I am happy the community and business owners have looked to Mill Street (and the borough as a whole) and are revitalizing it. We look towards other small communities for inspiration: Yardley Borough, Newtown Borough, and New Hope.

And yes crime is everywhere. Is there crime in Yardley? Sure.  Is there crime in Newtown? Of course.  Is there crime in New Hope? Absolutely. But when was the last time that you heard of a brazen shooting in any of those three towns. Men shooting onto a pedestrian street. Is this what happened? I don’t know… but that is what is being connected to Historic Bristol Borough. And the fact remains… a young man was shot dead on one of my community streets. The same streets our children use to walk to our borough school. The same streets I walk my dog and push my daughter’s stroller on.

We absolutely need to look at this scenario and think to ourselves what is going on here? What is happening in our community? I am imploring the Borough Council, the Police Department and most importantly the community to look at this incident and the other incidents prior and try to figure out how to fix this. Crime is everywhere… but that is not an excuse,

With each crime more good people are trying to determine how they can move out of the borough… forced to rent because they can’t sell. We can keep bringing people to the borough for our fabulous festivals and fantastic events but what we need to be concentrating on is removing drugs and eliminating the crime from our community – for the residents who live here.

Saying “Crime is Everywhere” is a lazy solution to a real problem. Residents – if you see crime report it – this is our town and ignoring a problem will not make it go away.
