Crews responded to the 700 block of Newport Road in Bristol Township around 9 a.m. for a second-floor first-floor bedroom fire.

Upon arrival, the residents were evacuated and had one dog with them. Two dogs and two cats remained inside the smoke-filled home and were taken out safely by firefighters, Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito said.

One of the dogs was taken to the veterinarian’s office for evaluation and released by late morning.

The fire was caused by careless smoking in the bedroom and left serious damage in the room, Dippolito said.

The house was uninhabitable due to fire, smoke and water damage, according to the fire marshal.

The residents were being assisted by the American Red Cross.
