The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced last week that construction activities will begin next week for a four-month-long project involving a series of improvements and repairs to approach roadways, various intersections, curbs, and sidewalks in the vicinity of the Lower Trenton (“Trenton Makes, The World Takes”) Toll-Supported Bridge.

The multi-faceted project’s initial work stage will consist of roadway excavation and other activities beginning Tuesday, March 24, along South Delmorr Avenue south of Bridge Street in Morrisville. Northbound traffic on South Delmorr Avenue will need to follow a short detour to access Bridge Street while construction work takes place on this project segment.

Eventually, the project work will involve portions of other roadways near the bridge that connects Trenton, N.J. with Morrisville, PA. The undertaking will address worn pavements, safety deficiencies, and other issues at the approach roadways, intersections and walkways that provide vehicular and pedestrian access to the bridge across the Delaware River.

Construction activities are to be staged in a manner that will minimize potential impacts for weekday job commuters. Work activities will be restricted to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays. Single lanes of travel in both directions will be maintained on the bridge and approaches at all times.

In the months to come, the work will periodically require detours for side streets like Delmorr, Central and Park avenues in Morrisville and the Route 1 northbound and southbound ramps along New Warren Street in Trenton. Additional detours will be needed in Trenton when work takes place at New Warren Street intersections with William Trent Place/Bridge Street and Shepherd Street/Route 1 southbound on and off ramps.

Weather permitting, the project’s construction activities should reach completion by late July.
