A family preparing for Sunday church services escaped their burning house just after sunrise, according to officials.

Local volunteer firefighters were called to the single-story home at 1 Mountain Lane, which is at the corner of Maple Lane, around 7:15 a.m. for a reported closet fire.

Levittown Fire Company No. 2 Chief Ralph Gumbert said his crews arrived to the home to find heavy smoke pouring out. Firefighters from the Falls Township, Edgely and Fairless Hills fire companies also responded.

Firefighters were able to quickly put down the flames, but heavy smoke and heat damage may have left the home a total loss, Gumbert said.

The fire was contained to the bedroom and closet, the chief said.

The blaze may have been caused by a wiring issue in the closet, Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito said.

Dippolito and Gumbert both told LevittownNow.com the family was alerted to the fire by a working smoke detector.

The American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania responded to the scene and is assisting the family until their insurance kicks in, Dippolito said. Gumbert stated the family will be staying with a relative Sunday night.

Sunday was the birthday of a 5-year-old little girl who lived at the house with her 11-year-old brother and parents.

Several Bristol Township residents said they were organizing a clothing collection drive for the family. No firm details were finalized as of 3 p.m.
