Bristol Township has made significant advances last year in spearheading a new recycling campaign.

Township Manager Bill McCauley announced at the January 15 council meeting that the township has increased its residential recycling collection rate by almost 48 percent in 2014 compared to previous years. Recycling tonnage increased from approximately 2,896 tons in 2013 to a staggering 4,268 tons collected in 2014.

The increase is in response to the townships’ switch to a fully automated collection contract with Waste Management that began in January of last year. The township’s efforts to increase recycling included the introduction of 65 gallon recycling carts and 95 gallon refuse containers for all residential households in January 2014.

“We know that increasing recycling rates means reduced waste being sent to the landfill, a cleaner community for the residents of Bristol, a lower carbon footprint and money saved for the township,” said Council President Bob Lewis.

The township has launched several initiatives to help improve its recycling efforts, by sharing information withย residents on the proper way to recycle, and by rewarding residents with a gift card at the monthly council meetings for their recycling efforts.

“I would like to congratulate the residents of Bristol Township,” McCauley stated. “This year has been a transition for everyone, but our residents have done an incredible job stepping up their recycling efforts.”

In November, the township hired Chelsea Hoffman as its new full-time environmental officer.

Hoffman will work on the direction of Bristol Township recycling coordinator Scott Swichar and will help the township ” step up its efforts to clean up and beautify.”

โ€œWe need to be more responsive to trash and recycling issues on private property and illegal dumping on public sites,โ€ McCauley said. โ€œWe are moving ‘full steam ahead’ with an intense litter removal program and hiring an environmental officer is just one of the steps we are taking.โ€
