The Bristol Township School Board voted 8-0ย Tuesday night to officially close Mary Devine Elementary School in Croydon.

The move comes as a technicality because the building has been closed since summer and students are currently relocated to the Benjamin Franklin Academy building on Mill Creek Road in Levittown.

After an Act 34 closing hearing, the board had to vote to officially close the building before construction of a 1,300-student elementary school could begin. District officials said recently the project is awaiting final permits and the OK from the state’s Department of Education.

The district mailed letters of intent to the lowest responsible bidders in November. Officials said the project is expected to cost around $39 million.

The construction of the new building can begin once demolition of the current building, which was built in the 1950s is completed. The new school is expected to be open for the start of the 2016-2017 school year, Superintendent Dr. Samuel Lee said recently.

Bristol Township Council voted to give the project final approval in October.
