6abc reported a vigil was held by friend and family Wednesday night at the Bensalem crash site. The story from the television station also reports that bus stop safety was also an issue at the school board meeting.

As of late Wednesday night, no charges have been filed against the 18-year-old Bensalem resident and Bucks County Technical High School student who struck Minete.

Original Story:

A 16-year-old Bensalem girl was struck by a truck and killed Wednesday morning. The driver of the truck was an 18-year-old student at Bristol Township’s Bucks County Technical High School.

The crash happened at 6:40 a.m. as the 16-year-old Bensalem High School student was crossing Bensalem Boulevard from the north side of Bridgewater Road, police said.  The 16-year-old was reported to be in the crosswalk when the 18-year-old’s 1984 Ford Bronco II struck and dragged her.

Police said a “Bensalem Township School District bus was stationary (eastbound) at the time of the accident, with its stop arm and red signals activated.”

Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran said in a press conference that the 18-year-old “disregarded the school bus activation lights and stop sign.”

The identity of the 16-year-old Bensalem High School sophomore killed in the accident is being withheld by LevittownNow.com until police confirm next of kin has been notified. Police did not release the identity of the 18-year-old technical high school student, who is a Bensalem resident. No charges have been filed against the 18-year-old as of noon and police did not state whether any would be filed.

“The driver of the striking vehicle stopped at the scene and is currently cooperating with the investigation,” police said in a statement.

The 16-year-old was attended to by medics and rushed to Area Health’s Torresdale Campus. Police said she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The crash happened on the same street where Bucks County Technical High School student Ryan Viola, 17, was struck as he crossed Bensalem Boulevard at Portside Drive in Fall 2012. No charges were filed in that case because the driver of the striking vehicle had a green light.

Wednesday’s crash closed traffic in the area of Bensalem Boulevard and Bridgewater Road for several hours as police investigated the fatal crash.

“Certainly, it’s a tragic event and two families lives are changed forever,” Harran said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Bensalem police at 215-633-3719.
