The McDonald’s eatery on Veterans Highway (Route 413) in Bristol Township has closed. The restaurant was one of the first of the iconic McDonald’s to open in Bucks County. The location opened in 1958 and served thousands upon thousands of customers until it closed recently.

A new McDonald’s is set to open just down the street at the corner of Bath Road and Veterans Highway in the coming weeks. From the outside, it appears final work on the building in the process of being completed.

The new McDonald’s comes as the company is in the middle of a billion dollar effort to redesign almost all of the chain’s 14,000 locations in the next few years. The new design is more customer friendly and extends the amount of products the fast food brand can sell, according to the company.

Project attorney Thomas Hecker said last year before Bristol Township officials that the old McDonald’s on Veterans Highway holds a special place in his heart because he used to go on dates to the eatery with his wife after taking in a movie. “I won’t say how long ago that was,” he joked.

The first McDonald’s opened as a BBQ joint in California in the 1940s. By the early 1950s, the owners realized hamburgers were their hot selling item and launched the chain we know today. Rapid nationwide expansion came in the 1960s as fast food swept across America.

No plans for the old McDonald’s site have been announced.
