The Penndel Borough Council awarded a $491,428 drainage improvement contract to a Bethlehem construction company.

The council unanimously voted on November 11 to award the contract for the LeGrande Avenue Drainage Improvements Project to Joao & Bradley Construction.

The project comes after flooding in the area of LeGrande Avenue, according to borough officials.
Borough Engineer Carol Schuehler of Urwiler & Walter Inc. said she expects the final contract documents to be settled next month. Construction could begin as early as January with April 1 as the anticipated completion date.
Schuehler wrote in a letter to the borough after reviewing four bids:
I have tabulated the bids to determine that Joao & Bradley Construction Co. Inc. of Bethlehem PA submitted the lowest of these bids. I have also reviewed the bid documents to confirm that they are compete, and checked…to confirm that the contractor is not listed as debarred for federal contracts, and received positive references from others who have worked with Joao & Bradley on public projects.

Councilwoman Beverly Wolfe said in statement that she is excited for the project to move forward. She said the project will improve pedestrian and vehicular safety.
“I believe the new stormwater management system that will be put in place with this project will positively effect our I & I issues,” she said.

The concept for the project was developed in 2011 after began to hit the area of LeGrande Avenue.
Council President Sean Weckerly said in he statement that the borough was “very grateful” for two state grants that will help pay for the project.
