Officials in the township held a ribbon cutting on Friday to officially open the road once know for flooding and massive potholes that could easily bend tire rims.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Pat Mallon said the $975,000 project is a good example of how local, county and state government could work together to repair infrastructure.

A Casino Redevelopment Grant and a state grant helped pay for the undertaking. Due to the project coming in under budget, left over money paid for improvements to the Middletown side of Township Line Road.

“As a fire chief, I’m happy we’ll be able to traverse this road without hitting potholes,” state Representative Frank Farry (R-142) said. Farry is the chief of the Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company.

State Senator Tommy Tomlinson (R-6) remarked about the efforts to get state funding to fix the roadway and said the previous condition of Big Oak Road reminded him of a washboard.

A half-mile section of the road, part of which lies in a flood plain, is now 16-inches thick. Zoning Director Pat Duffy told LevittownNow.com in June that a foot of concrete and several inches of asphalt will help stop erosion of the road. A guard rail and drainage culverts have also been added along the road.

Mallon said the road reconstruction is a project the township has wanted to complete for several years.
