A local organization was recognized for their efforts in developing standardized tools used in comprehensive clinical management of concussions for athletes of all ages by both State Rep. Steve Santarsiero and a representative from Senator Pat Toomey’s office, on Tuesday at a special presentation given at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Santarsiero, on behalf of the Bucks County Delegation, presented a citation to Bucks County SAFE KIDS and the Comprehensive Concussion Program of Bucks County in a presentation attended by hospital staff as well as ATI employees.

Bucks SAFE KIDS was specifically recognized for their efforts in developing Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT).
The program has seen an increase of 1,800 parents participating in just the fall programs this year. They have provided programs for more than 25 youth sport organizations providing information for 3,200 youth sport athletes.
“With the professional support from the Bucks SAFE KIDS program, we have seen this effort become extremely successful in raising awareness for the recognition of concussions, not just in youth sports but in all activities and accidents,” Santarsiero said. “And Bucks SAFE KIDS has been there year round to provide information to coaches, players and parents about preventing concussions and then making sure the brain fully heals from a concussion.”

Led by the trauma department at St. Mary’s, Bucks SAFE KIDS is one of more than 600 state and local coalitions who are part of SAFE KIDS Worldwide, a global network of organizations whose mission is to prevent accidental child injury. The Bucks division specifically, serves 21 public and private highschools and middleschools, or about 7,500 student athletes annually.
