The investigation into the death of a man struck and killed by an Amtrak MetroLiner train heading northbound through Bristol Township’s Croydon section continued as of press time early Monday evening, according to police.

Authorities said they were unclear on why the man was on or near the tracks when the incident occurred.

Train service had resumed by 5 p.m. on the tracks used by Amtrak and SEPTA’s Trenton Regional Rail line.

According to Acting Bristol Township Chief of Police Lt. John Godzieba, the train driver reported that he struck something, possibly a person, in the area of the Croydon station around 1:30 p.m. The multi-car train finally came to a about a mile down the track and police were called.

A white sheet covered remains of the person struck by the train; what appeared to be blood was splattered on the front of the train. At the station, where police suspect the man was struck, workers from the coroner’s office collected debris and a shoe that possibly belonged to the victim.

Amtrak spokesperson Kimberly Woods told LevittownNow.com the train – identified as Keystone 648 – had 85 passengers on board. The transit agency’s Keystone service travels between  New York City and Harrisburg by way of Philadelphia.

SEPTA and Amtrak service was suspended for several hours while local and federal investigators combed the area, took notes about the scene and collected debris. Amtrak police vehicles rushed between the site of the train and station with their red and blue lights on.

The fatal incident on the line that runs through Croydon is the first this year in the Levittown area.

The Trenton SEPTA Regional Rail line and Amtrak service between Philadelphia and Trenton was suspended around 1:30 p.m. due to a death on the tracks in Croydon.

Acting Bristol Township Chief of Police Lt. John Godzieba told LevittownNow.com the person was killed when they reportedly were struck by an Amtrak train around 1:30 p.m.

Officers responded to the area near the Croydon SEPTA Station for the incident and searched the tracks to locate the struck pedestrian.

A SEPTA spokesperson confirmed the service was suspended on the line due to the investigation and likely will be for several hours.

Amtrak police were called to assist Bristol Township officials at the scene.

Attempts to reach Amtrak for comment at publication time have gone unsuccessful.
