Bristol Twp. School Buses Get New Home

After months of parking roughly 80 buses and more than a dozen vans in a  lot at the Ben Franklin School on Mill Creek Road, the Bristol Township School Board voted Monday to rent a proper lot for the buses that transport the districts students.

The school board voted Monday night to approve a deal with Green Lane Properties. The deal lets the district park their bus fleet at 2201 Green Lane for $8,000 a month. The contract would be valid until June 2015, Superintendent Dr. Sam Lee said.

Lee said the buses would move to the lot on Green Lane before Mary Devine Elementary School operations were temporarily transferred to the Ben Franklin building starting in a few weeks.

The $8,000 cost for rent would be paid for by the school district but would be reimbursed by bus contractor Student Transportation of America (STA.) The bus company pays yearly host fees to the district under the terms of the their five-year deal signed in 2013.

The location of the bus fleet has been discussed for about a year. The lot at the Ben Franklin School was only meant to be temporary. It was mentioned at past school board meetings that splitting the buses between the Ben Franklin site and FDR Middle School was previously considered.

Lee said the bus maintenance center would remain at the old Delhaas High School on Veterans Highway. He added the district secured a “very favorable” lease at  the facility last year.

District officials confirmed the bus driver lounge would not be hosted in the Ben Franklin School as part of the bus lot lease. The lounge and transportation department offices would move to the facility on Green Lane, lee said.
