As temperatures rise, so do social media myths concerning the well being of dogs in hot weather.

The myth, which has recently resurfaced and has been making it’s way around social media sites again for the warm weather warns pet owners of putting ice cubes in their water bowls. One post commonly passed around is from the Wendt Worth Corgis blog, from a post originally published in July 2010.

Since the publishing and popularity growth of the original myth, many news organizations and veterinarians voicing out against the claims made in the original post.
According to the original post, “The ice water I gave Baran caused violent muscle spasms in his stomach which caused the bloating.”

However, according to ABC News and contributions from Dr. Tina Wismer, medical director at the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center, “this is not true.” Dr. Wismer said: “Dogs do not bloat from drinking ice water on hot days… They can be given as treats or put in the water bowl. Some behaviorists even recommend freezing toys or treats in ice for dogs to chew on.”
That would contradict the post from 2010 and dozens upon dozens that have appeared on social media since.
