The black bear, which is reported to be about 175 pounds, has evaded Bensalem authorities, police said.

“We ask residents to cover their trash, cover their grills and take any other precautions necessary,” police said in a statement. The jokingly added, “this bear is apparently smarter than the average police officer.”

A black bear was spotted Friday morning in Bensalem.

According to a fire official in the town, police officers began keeping tabs on the bear after it was spotted around 8:45 a.m.
Police said around 10 a.m. that the bear was in the area Bensalem Boulevard and the Turnpike. The bear was first noted in the area of Edge Avenue and Michael Drive.

School officials have been notified but none of the buildings are on lockdown, police said.
Officials are tracking the bear and waiting for the Game Commission to arrive as of 10:15 a.m.
It was about a year ago when a black bear hung out throughout Lower Bucks County. That bear is believed by officials to have swam to New Jersey, where it was captured.

State officials said last year that residents should not try to approach or feed any bears.
