A spokesperson confirmed Monday that the Kmart location on East Lincoln Highway in Middletown Township will be closing.

Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications, for Kmart’s parent company Sears Holdings Company said the store will close come June. Liquidation sales are expected to begin on April 3.

In total, 87 employees will lose their jobs when the store closes, Riefs said. Most of those employees are part-time. He added that eligible employees will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores.

The store will be closed because the lease for the building was not renewed.

“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” Riefs said. “These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home.”

The closing comes weeks after Sears Holding Company posted lower-than-expected sales losses. Kmart sales were down 5.7 percent year over year.
