Citizen group Middletown Township Taxpayers United (MTTU) is holding a rally Monday evening outside the Middletown Municipal Building.

The 7 p.m. rally will begin 30 minutes before the Board of Supervisors meet for their reorganization meeting. Newly-elected board member William Oettinger and incumbent George Leonhauser will be sworn in at the meeting.

The group is protesting the implementation of a 1 percent earned income tax (EIT) that was approved in late December. Recently, the board committed to reduce the controversial 1 percent earned income tax (EIT) to .5 percent later this month. The 2 mill reduction in property taxes, which comes to about $58 a household, that was originally approved will be reinstated along with the reduced EIT.

Despite the EIT reduction, many residents are still upset.

William O’Connor, one of the rally organizers, said recently the group hopes the board will reopen the 2014 budget so that other alternatives to the EIT can be discussed. He went on to say MTTU is hoping at least 200 residents show up.

Taxpayers have spoke out in recent weeks against Oettinger and Leonhauser, who both campaigned on seven years of no tax increases. Residents on both sides of political spectrum have said they felt mislead by the campaign the candidates waged.

Leonhauser defended the campaign last week and said he never promised no tax increases. Oettinger, a former Neshaminy School Board member, has yet to respond to LevittownNow.com for comment or attend recent board meetings.
