Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Holcomb joined the students, staff and roughly 100 military veterans via Skype Friday at Maple Point Middle School in Middletown for the school’s annual ceremony to honor those who served.
In the audience, 14-year-old Penndel resident Riker Holcomb watched his military father speak via the live internet feed.

A surprise that Riker Holcomb didn’t see coming was the fact that his father had finished his mission in Afghanistan early and he was broadcasting from an airport in North Carolina, not thousands of miles away in the Middle East. The news meant an ecstatic Riker Holcomb was just weeks away from flying to Utah, where Christopher Holcomb lives, to see his father. The Army sergeant has been away for nearly a year.

The event also touched on the important role all servicemen and woman play.
Students sang patriotic songs and each and every veterans who attended stood and was honored. Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick, State Rep. Frank Farry, Army veteran Jack Pashley and others spoke to the importance of those who have served.

All five branches of the armed forces were represented among the roughly 100 honorees. Some won Bronze Stars, others Purple Hearts, but all were heroes.
