Middletown Township Public Works Department crews have spent a lot of time providing a temporary fix on problem-plagued Big Oak Road. Township Manager Stephanie Teoli told LevittownNow.com that crews are finishing up their work.
Before the township work crews resurfaced the road, potholes and bent rims were not uncommon on the one-mile-long roadway, which runs from Woodbourne Road to Township Line Road in Lower Makefield.

Teoli said the most recent work now makes the road passable, but the Board of Supervisors is expected to begin seeking bids for a contractor to completely overhaul the road in 2014.
In August, the Board of Supervisors received one bid from a Philadelphia-based contractor to completely redo Big Oak Road. Officials voted to deny the bid and rework the project.

The township originally planned to revamp the road in two phases. Teoli said the plans have been taken back to the drawing board and combined into one phase.

Middletown is asking for $750,000 in casino grant money to help pay for the project that is expected to come in at close to $1.5 million.
Portions of the roadway will need to be completely dug up and raised, Teoli said. Drainage improvements will be installed along portions of the roadway to fix ponding, which has lead to many of the serious problems.

Middletown closed the road in February because of the problems.
