County Commissioners Extend Bucks Senior Center Hours in Effort to Combat Excessive Heat

Seniors are one of our most vulnerable  groups of people in cases of  extreme  heat. With that in mind, and in response to the National Weather Service Excessive Heat Warning , the Board of Bucks County Commissioners will extend hours until 6 p.m. or later Monday to Friday from July 15 19, 2013 at several senior community centers as a respite from the dangerous heat and humidity, a press release from the county said.

Additionally, four senior centers will open Saturday, July 20 as noted in the schedule below, including the Bristol Township Center, Director Bonnie Worth shared through social media this morning with LevittownNow.

The county Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and Emergency Management Agency remind seniors that extreme hot weather can cause serious heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Though everyone should take precautions, seniors and children are especially vulnerable to effects from the heat.  The best approach during a heat wave is to remain indoors with an air-conditioner or in a ventilated room with a fan. Unless restricted, drink plenty of water and/or non-alcoholic beverages to prevent dehydration. Minimize time spent outdoors and stay out of the sun whenever possible.

The public is encouraged to check frequently on elderly neighbors, friends and family members. Symptoms of a possible heat injury include faintness, dizziness, nausea, weakness, and heavy sweating. As with any emergency, call 9-1-1 when necessary. Fans may be available through the AAA for senior residents of Bucks County (age 60+) who do not have a fan or air conditioner. The elderly also may call 267-880-5700 for help during this period of extreme heat.

Except as noted, Monday through Friday (July 15-19) the following senior centers will be open from 9:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, July 20 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
