Cops: Traffic Stop Leads to High Speed Chase & Arrest of Bristol Man

A routine traffic stop on Tuesday night by Bristol Borough police lead to ย high-speed chase along Route 13 where one officer was injured, ย a police cruiser damaged and a Bristol man was placed under arrest on three felony charges, police say.

It all started when Bristol Borough oolice initiated a traffic stop at the Luk Oil Station on the corner of Bath Street and Route 13 of a vehicle ย just before 9:15 p.m Tuesday night, police say.

Seated in the driver’s seat of the red Ford Crown Victoria was Darius Newtown 27, of Bristol Borough, who provided police with his Pennsylvania state identification and then ย fled at a high rate of speed out of the gas station parking lot on to Route 13, ย as the officer who initiated the stop was heading back to his cruiser, according to court documents.

According to police, Newton weaved through the construction zone on Route 13 nearly missing several vehicles traveling on the busy roadway, refusing to stop as authorities demanded, court records show.

The car chase ended and pursuit of the defendant started around Corson Street and Route 13, when the defendant hit the front passenger side of the police cruiser, attempting to flee police the probable cause affidavit says.

Newton struggled with police, which caused an injury to Bristol Borough Police Officer Sgt. ย Joe Moors’ left shoulder, however, the defendant was taken into custody with ย assistance from another borough police officer.

After being taken into custody, Newton was found to be in possession of one bag of marijuana, telling police he fled because he thought ย police had a domestic relations warrant for him and the controlled substance he had in his possession.

Newton was arraigned by District Court Judge Frank W. Peranteau Sr on two charges of aggravated assault, fleeing an officer, reckless endangerment, ย resisting arrest, as well as other associated offenses.

Newton is out on bail in lieu of 10 percent of ย $25,000 bail. The defendant ย is scheduled ย for a preliminary hearing on July 10.

Sgt Moors was treated for his injuries at Lower Bucks Hospital and released.
