TMA Bucks (Transportation Management Association) announced today that Middle Bucks Institute of Technology was the overall winner of the 6th Annual Bucks County High School Seatbelt Safety Challenge. Middle Bucks Institute of Technology student drivers had the highest overall seatbelt use (97 percent) over 18 other Bucks County high schools that participated in the challenge.

Middle Bucks Institute of Technology HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) student leaders Sabrina Bunkeut, Kristina Johnson, Gabriella Guzman and Health Occupations/Health Sciences instructor Marsha Moyer were presented with a $500 cash grant and perpetual trophy plaque by TMA Bucks executive director Bill Rickett during a student assembly.
The cash prize is donated by TMA Bucks and must be used by the school for safety-related purposes. Rickett was joined by sponsors Jenny Robinson of AAA Mid-Atlantic, Michele Gannon of Gannon Insurance Agency and Laura DeStefano of Automotive Training Center’s Warminster campus.
In Fall 2012, baseline surveys on seatbelt usage by student drivers were conducted at high schools throughout the county without the knowledge of the student body or administration in order to ensure the most accurate data sampling. All schools were then challenged to raise seatbelt usage and participate in the 6th Annual Bucks County High School Seatbelt Safety Challenge. Various student groups then at each participating school promote the Seatbelt Challenge to all students throughout the school year in a variety of creative ways.

The sponsors for this year’s challenge were AAA Mid-Atlantic, Automotive Training Center (Warminster), McCafferty Auto Group, Gannon Insurance Agency, Senator Tommy Tomlinson, Univest, McMahon Associates and Visit Bucks County.
Follow-up surveys took place unannounced in April and the winning school was decided.

As a leading advocate in teen driver safety TMA Bucks also announced last week that Central Bucks High School East was the winner of the first-ever Teen Driver Safety Video PSA Challenge powered by Comcast, which was newly introduced this year as part of the Bucks County High School Seatbelt Safety Challenge.
