After a presentation by the students at Franklin D. Roosevelt Middle School in Bristol Township on Thursday, the school was given a Waste Management Think Green Grant.

The school’s ECO Crew class received the $4,000 grant after the group took part in a symposium on the environment and education.

As part of Waste Management subsidiary Wheelabrator Technologies symposium, the students polled peers and community members on recycling habbits and also surveyed school officials on how they worked to help the environment. The middle-schoolers also devised plans on how to get classmates and district officials to recycle more and cut down on waste.

Waste Management offered the ECO Crew a tours of Wheelabrator Technologies in Falls Township and the company’s recycling facility in Philadelphia. The students also met with Carl Brown of Bristol-based electronics recycling company E-Waste Experts.

“These are lessons they will carry with them for the rest of their lives, continuing to better our environment,” lead symposium teacher Meredith Mueller said of the curriculum the ECO Crew learns.

Waste Management officials also presented Mueller and fellow ECO Crew teacher Mike Ortman with token of appreciation for their work and dedication.

The ECO Crew at FDR Middle School started 19 years ago as an after-school club and since has morphed into a class for students.
