The blaze damaged the apartments before it was declared under control just before 11 a.m.

There was no word of any life-threatening injuries.

As firefighters poured water on the burning residences, neighbors gathered to watch from Garfield Street and nearby Bristol Borough High School.

One witness at the scene described seeing “pitch black” smoke pouring from the structures.

Bill Roarty, a neighbor, said he walked over to investigate after hearing sirens in the area. Roarty reported seeing heavy flames and thick smoke billowing from both the back and the roof of the building.

Borough crews were assisted by firefighters from around Lower Bucks County and Burlington County, New Jersey.
